Lewes dispatch Crawley to gain their first win of the season

After a weeks worth of inclement weather, Lewes were in high spirits as they lined up on the still, sun soaked pitch at Falmer.

Crawley won the toss and chose to push back. This wasn't an issue for Lewes who wasted no time in asserting their dominance, within the first 5 minutes, Copplestone found the net making it 1-0 to the home team. Shortly after, a lifted goal over the defenders and keepers sticks by Ash Kempton made it 2-0. Lewes continued to play like a winning team with the defensive line of Godwin, Loader, Cade and Forster and keeper Casselden almost spectating for most of the half. The midfield combination of Middleton, Kempton, Child, Stillman, Best and Appleton showed great finesse, continually passing the ball around the Crawley defence to create chances. Before the half was over, Best and Child found the backboard to close the half out at 4-0.

Crawley came out swinging in the second half, gaining more possession and stringing together a few more passes. Lewes stole the ball from a Crawley attack and went on the counter, Martin skilled the opposition defence to take the ball into the top of the D before drawing the keeper and slipping it right to Child who slotted it into the open goal, 5-0. The second half also saw a number of short corner opportunities for Lewes, however the infamous Mark Best drag flick sadly failed to do the business for Lewes. Crawley did manage to save some face with a couple of goals in the second half, but Martin and Copplestone ably assisted by Dax saw to those closing out the game 7-2.

This was undoubtedly the best performance of the season by the 4s so far, and felt like it was well deserved after a tough first few games. Man of the Match went to Ben Godwin for his first stint at Centre Back, with mentions to John Child and Ash Kempton who also had excellent games.
