4s Put to the Sword by Saxon Subs

The first match weekend in Sussex Div 2 coincided with the first match of the season for the men’s 4’s. Missing a number of regular players they pieced together a side from those willing to get to Hastings for 10am. A scratch side of the bare 11 started slowly but held off the youthful and numerous South Saxons home team.

By halftime they were 1-0 down and the chat was positive. The team came out in the 2nd half and Loader netted but was disallowed for an earlier offence. It was about this time that fatigue kicked in and the fitness of the youthful opposition on this hot sunny morning won out. They moved to a more offensive formation and took control of the last 25 minutes. Sharpie was kept very busy in goal but unable to block the relentless onslaught as he picked ball after ball from the back of the net.

With hindsight the 4s would have been happy with 1-0 down but in the end it was 8-0. Time to get the regulars back on the pitch and start the season. Fitness, training and age all showed itself on the Saxons turf that morning.
