A much changed Lewes side including Pete Fleming, who last played over 11 years ago, struggled in the early exchanges to get any possession on a hard surface as Littlehampton dominated and it was no surprise they took the lead with a clever touch from a firm hit into the circle.
Lewes began to get back into the match but it was still against the run of play when Chris Picken picked out Paul Spruce with a hard pass he deflected into the open goal. The match became a physical battle and Lewes lost Ollie Callf, who damaged his hamstring, after an over aggressive tackle from the hosts just on half time.
It got worse for Lewes when Bill Short damaged a finger early in the second half and went off but their youngsters stepped up with Adam Stonley and Jamie Cook working hard closing down the Littlehampton midfield. Lewes then broke quickly from defence and Spruce got his second with a volley from the top of the circle which wrong footed the goalkeeper.
Lewes were then under severe pressure and goalkeeper Chris Sharpe made a number of outstanding saves before Littlehampton equalised when a loose ball was turned into the goal. With ten minutes remaining Martyn Stillman, who worked tirelessly throughout, found Spruce in the circle and he deflected in his accurate pass for his hat-trick and Lewes' winner.
Report by Paul Spruce.
