Despite early Lewes pressure Eastbourne opened the scoring from close range but Lewes responded when Rory Jervis hammered home a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle and then scored again in similar fashion from an acute angle. Josh Pewter made it 3-1 having only just come onto the pitch before Eastbourne reduced the arrears just on half time after a deflection off a defenders stick to make it 3-2.
In the second half Jervis increased the lead with his hat trick early on but Eastbourne again got back into the game again scoring from a penalty corner to make it 4-3 and then Lewes goalkeeper Chris Sharpe made a crucial save tipping a deflection onto the crossbar and clearing when an equaliser looked likely. Lewes finally made the game safe when Jervis scored his fourth and Lewes's fifth from a penalty corner with ten minutes remaining.
