Lewes were forced to play with 10 players when, after twenty minutes, Bill Short turned his ankle over. They were under almost constant pressure throughout but resilient covering and tackling by Sean Rowlands and Martyn Stillman frustrated the hosts in the first half.
The pattern was similar in the second half as Eastbourne missed opportunities and it was from a rare attack that Lewes forced a penalty corner and Steve Fuller's hard shot was deflected in by Paul Spruce with fifteen minutes left. Defenders Mark Tonkin and Simon Forster continued to thwart the home attacks and Mike Fuller skilfully held the ball up down the left flank as Lewes tired as they tried to protect their slender lead. With just under 10 minutes remaining goalkeeper Chris sharpe made a brilliant reflex save but could not clear the ball and it was forced over the goal line for the equaliser. Lewes held on in the final minutes to gain a creditable draw.
