Pre Christmas stuffing?

On the face of it a stuffing. Slow out of the blocks and 3-0 down after 10 minutes the home side, playing away from the Southdown, looked a pale imitation of the side that had thrashed Crowborough the week before. But a closer inspection of the game is warranted.
Clearly defensive mistakes at the start of the game had surrendered two goals to Eastbourne. Added to this a defensive reorganisation was necessary due to injury as the redoubtable Rich Pulley stepped into the centre of defence with the unflappable Chris Picken.
From this undeniably porous position the defence tightened up and the sporadic attacks on the Eastbourne goal became more regular. Despite a number of chances being spurned James Hay stepped up to make the half time score 3-1. After the break the same pattern emerged but the crucial goal was scored by Eastbourne after Lewes had failed to convert any one of eight short corners. With the game gone the away side converted a further left wing cross to seal the win.
There was much to admire in the way that the team adapted to one of the best sides in the league - with Phil Middleton, John Child and Sam Matthews providing quality momentum in the second half its also worth noting how often they stripped the opposition of ball when not in possession, again something that had not been happening in the first half.
As my english teacher would have said a "curates egg" of a game (look it up if needs be).
