Wylie Hat-trick Slaughters Sorry Saxons

After a successful game last week against Worthing, the Lewes 2s wanted to continue their great form on Saturday when they faced a mid table South Saxons squad. Seb Daniels's delivered a team talk that ironed out the pitfalls of our gameplay from the previous match and we were rearing to go as the umpire blew the whistle for the game to begin.

The first 5 minutes saw an evenly matched game but increased lewes midfield pressure and numerous deflections of the keeper meant that the ball found the stick of Tom Wylie who calmly striked it the bottom corner. With the South Saxons attack not being able to penetrate our defence thanks to the strong sticks of Jamie Neill and Sam Anderson, most of the possession belonged to Lewes. A long corner taken by Tom Clinch and gifted to Jamie Neill proceeded a hard slap that deflected off the stick of Jack Searl up into the roof of net, giving Lewes a two goal deficit. Constant Lewes attacks were coupled with a fair share of short corners; one of which was a nifty one two at the top of the D that lead to the ball being buried by Seb Daniels's in the bottom left corner. Tension was high in the South Saxons team causing defensive complacency which Lewes were quick to exploit. Some great runs from Theo Whiting and well placed inside balls from Danny Poulson meant the ball was neatly threaded around the outside of their defence and the following short corner lead to Wylie being left unguarded on the penalty spot and a cool flick bulged the back of the net. 4-0 at half time.

The half time team talk reinforced our attacking play. Early on in the half Max Murray had the ball on the baseline and a clumsy Saxons player stopped the ball with his foot; something he did again later on earning him a red card. Lewes once again had a plethora of chances and short corners. One of these shorts, found Tom Clinch on the left and a bottom right corner smash gave Lewes the 5 0 advantage. Billy Palmer in goal was more busy in the 2nd half but some stern stops gave the team more confidence going forward. Great dribbling from Oliver Amos in the D lead to a shot, the deflection off the keeper fell onto the stick of Oli Loader and his powerful flick made the game all but won for the ‘on fire' Lewes side. Even more opportunities followed and superb dribbling from Jack Searl around the keeper left an open goal for a collective Oliver Amos slap. With Lewes peppering the goal so aggressively, another Wylie poached goal was on the cards and such thing happened 5 minutes before the final whistle, giving the squad it's biggest win of the season and even more confidence for the games to come.
