CUP: Sussex Knockout Competitions Men's 2nd XI Cup
HOME TEAM: Lewes Men’s 2’s 4 (Fuller, Rideout, Daniels, Blackwell)
AWAY TEAM: Southwick Men’s 2’s 2
Lewes Men’s 2’s continued their winning start to the season against a spirited Southwick side that never gave up.
Southwick started the game strongly and put Lewes under early pressure with Simon Bullmore making some great saves to keep it at 0-0. The first goal in a cup game is always important, and it was Lewes’ subs who proved to be the difference and helped break the deadlock. Quick counter attacking hockey allowed Joe Rideout to square the ball to Pete Fuller for a well taken tap in. 1-0 Lewes. The second Lewes goal came fairly quickly afterwards when more good play from Rideout allowed him to get away a searing reverse stick shot into the roof of the net.
Southwick never gave up and they managed to get a goal back early in the second half when some sloppy play from Lewes gave the ball away to the opposition. Despite a good first save from Bullmore, Southwick got to the rebound first and made it 2-1.
Lewes restored their two goal advantage, when a short corner was brilliantly worked to Seb Daniels who slotted in to the bottom corner. Southwick again showed their fighting spirit to get back to 3-2 with a goal on the break.
The Lewes victory was sealed with another converted short corner thanks to Dan Blackwell who showed some good skill and then hit a reverse into the bottom corner making it 4-2, sending Lewes into the semi-finals of the cup.
It was a great team performance by Lewes with excellent debuts by Jamie Neil and Oli Loader adding to the positives. This Lewes team look stronger every week.
