Victory sets up 8th April title clash vs Worthing

The Mens 2s recorded their 11th straight win with a 2-1 victory over a spirited Brighton 5s team. Lewes started quickly, putting pressure on the Brighton defence right from the push back. Forwards Oli Tapping, Ben Wood, Oliver Amos and Seb Daniels pressed hard and this early pressure paid off as Tom Clinch pounced on a mistake and fed Seb Daniels, whose powerful reserve strike squirmed over the line off the Brighton keeper. 1 – 0 with 5 minutes gone.

Lewes surged on sensing blood but Brighton shook off their slow start and began to battle across all areas of the pitch. Midfielders Tom Clinch, Oli Loader, Jamie Cooke and Sam Rea were challenged but kept their shape well, both limiting Brighton and feeding the Lewes attack. Brighton’s keeper however, was not in the mood, making numerous strong saves and keeping the score down to 1-0 at half time.

The second half saw Brighton change their approach which resulted in more pressure on the Lewes defence, however the confident back line of Theo Whiting, Peter Thomas, Jamie Neill, Guillaume Green and Matthew Denham were in no mood to allow any clear cut chances and it was from defence that Lewes’s second goal came. Twenty minutes into the second half, MOM Peter Thomas superbly picked off a Brighton attack, drove and threaded a pass through to Seb Daniels, who took one touch and buried the ball in the bottom right hand corner.

With 15 minutes left Brighton threw everything they had at Lewes and managed to claw a goal back but Lewes remained determined and strong, seeing out the game and a deserved 2-1 victory. Special credit goes to Jon Cornish for a strong and composed game having stepped in last minute and Sam Anderson for his adaptability, playing 4 positions throughout the game.

Sitting 1st in the league, Lewes play second placed Worthing 2s on Sunday 8th of April at home at 1:30 pm for a chance to claim the league.
