Double figures for the 2s

Lewes 2s took the prime 1:30 home slot and put on a show as they tore apart a weak Worthing side in the team’s biggest win for over 8 years.

Right from the push back the team moved the ball at lightning pace on the quick wet rapid Lewes Astro and two minutes in Seb Daniels smashed in a reverse shot from a Sam Anderson strike. Minutes later, Daniels dispatched a short corner and Joe Rideout finished a fast flow move to put Lewes 3-0 up only ten minutes in. Lewes pushed on, giving the Worthing defence and midfield no time on the ball and 20 minutes in, Daniels added his third and Lewes’s 4th.

The forward line of Rideout, Harry Devonport and Ben Yeats now smelt Worthing blood and it was Yeats who scored the fifth just yards out from a cut back. Keen to get in on the forwards action, the final goal of the half fell to midfielder Oli Loader to dispatch, putting Lewes 6-0 up at half time.

Despite the lead, the half time team talk’s focus was to pass and move more; and this renewed focus allowed Lewes to step up another level. Tom Clinch exchanged passes with Drew Wain and cutback to Daniels for the 7th. More good work in the D saw Loader’s first time strike make it 8 before the poor Worthing goal keeping gave Daniels another goal and Lewes’s 9th.

At the other end, the defence of Peter Thomas, Sam Anderson, Matthew Denham, Theo Whiting and Sam Rea were having a quiet day but showed greet concentration on the rare occasion Worthing mustered up an attack. A great tackle from Thomas allowed Drew Wain to drive up the pitch, play a quick pass and go and slot the ball under the keeper to put Lewes 10-0 up.

With Worthing crumbling and Lewes into double figures, Daniels added an 11th with a powerful reverse and Rideout the 12th with a tap in. Finally, in the dying seconds Daniels added his 7th with a deflection from a Clinch strike and rounded off a 13-0 thrashing.

Special mention to Billie Palmer who, despite having little to do, made one high quality save to keep a clean sheet and Harry Devonport for deciding to dribble when given a free shot from a short corner.

Next week the 2s face a tougher test away to mid table St Francis at 3pm.

MOM: Drew Wain
