5-0 victory over Worthing Men's 3's

LEAGUE: Sussex Div 2
HOME TEAM: Worthing Men’s 3’s 0
AWAY TEAM: Lewes Men’s 2’s 5 (Daniels 2, Yeats, Fuller 2)

Lewes Men’s 2’s were looking to continue their unbeaten run with a trip to Worthing 3’s. With Worthing having won their first game it was important that Lewes were ready to go from the whistle.

Before the game both teams gathered together on the halfway line, and, with spectators, immaculately observed a minute’s silence for Chris Axton, a Lewes HC stalwart who died suddenly last week. Our thanks to Worthing Men’s 3s, and their club, for this show of support. And our condolences to Chris’ family.

The umpires started the game and after a cagey first 10 minutes it was Lewes who broke the deadlock. Seb Daniels creating space in the D and striking a wonderful reverse past the keeper to get Lewes on the scoresheet. This first goal was all that Lewes needed to continue piling on the pressure until half time, with a second goal coming from a string of short corners. Pete Fuller lined up at the top of the D for drag flick, first shot saved. But before the Worthing defence could react the ball was fizzed to the right post where Ben Yeats was waiting to deflect the ball high into the net. Giving Lewes a 2-0 lead heading in to half time.

A strong team talk was needed to remind Lewes that this Worthing team had come back from 2-0 to win 4-3 just a week before. The first 5 minutes were the same as previous weeks, a real struggle in organisation and defensive stability. With a quick bit of play, Worthing had their first shot of the match, pinging off the post, Simon Bullmore and Jamie Neill scrambled to the ball and combined to get it clear. The score remained 2-0.

Despite the increased pressure from Worthing it was Lewes that continued to extend their lead. Pete Fuller was primed at top D. A low fast drag sailed past the keeper's left foot before he had a chance to move. 3-0 to Lewes. Not long later and Pete Fuller was getting his second, a drag wide of the post took a huge deflection from a Worthing stick, wrong footing the keeper.

Daniels made it 5-0, slotting the ball through the keeper's legs from yet another short corner. With a big lead built, it was important to maintain a clean sheet, something that was easier said than done, but with only a couple of chances Worthing were kept out.

A solid 5-0 victory makes it 4 from 4 with 17 goals scored in all competitions. Not a bad start for Lewes 2's.
