Lewes Men's 1st XI seal first 3 points of season

London Academicals 1st XI 0-3 Lewes 1st XI (Hickman, Clark, Baggs)

Lewes picked up their first points of the season in a well deserved victory away to London Academicals. Lewes knew from the get go that a win was imperative having lost their opening 2 games to tough opposition.

The away side got off to the perfect start inside the first 5 minutes when Matt Hickman received the ball at the top of the D, twisted and turned onto his reverse stick and buried a powerful shot into the bottom corner with the keeper standing no chance.

Lewes managed to control the tempo and pace of the game well, with Matt Clark and Harvey Waller working well in tandem in the heart of the midfield. London Academicals were limited to very few chances and were right to have a goal disallowed having come off the attacking players body on its way to goal.

The away side went into the break one goal to the good and feeling in control of the game. The second half started in the same manor and birthday boy Matt Clark was quick to react to a free hit, working his way into the circle, beating two defenders, before calmly slotting past the on-rushing goalkeeper to double Lewes’ lead and put daylight between them and the home side.

Lewes then had to withstand a period of pressure from London Academicals as they looked for a way back into the game. It was thanks to Ben Berrill in the Lewes goal, who prevented them from scoring with some fine reflex saves.

With 10 minutes to go, new signing Andrew Baggs got his first goal for Lewes as he sent a low hard flick into the bottom left hand corner. Making sure in the process that the 3 points were safely in the bag.

Lewes host Canterbury 2nd XI at home on Saturday - 3pm pushback. They will be looking to build on their first victory of the season and continue to climb up the table.
