With the M23 closed it was a long journey for Lewes early on Saturday but they got the right result with goals from Captain Chris Spruce and Jonny Rae and leapfrogged Canterbury into 4th place with a narrow victory.

At a windswept Polo Farm both teams struggled early on to get any control but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock when an offence in the Lewes circle was given as a penalty stroke despite Lewes’s protests. It was calmly despatched to give Canterbury the lead. Lewes came back into it with Matt Clark in midfield involved in most of Lewes’s attacks. Midway through the half Jonny Rea latched onto a loose ball In the circle after a good move, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home the equaliser. Ten minutes later Lewes took the lead when skipper Chris Spruce was first to a rebound off the goalkeeper to score.

Lewes had chances to extend the lead in the second half but wasted opportunities and Canterbury came back into the game in the last fifteen minutes. The Lewes defence, with Mark Best having a steady game at left back and James Callaway breaking up a number of their attacks, held on for an important win.
