With only six games of the league season remaining Lewes knew they had to make a major effort to secure at least one point against a side lying in fourth position.

Unfortunately, injury deprived them of two key players and this did nothing for the team morale.

West Hampstead started at a fierce pace which Lewes could not match. They scored two good goals and Lewes struggled to rally. Strong defensive work, especially from Tom Newman and Matt Rickson, kept the home team at bay and they did not add to the scoreline before half time.

Lewes rallied from the start of the second half and good pressure from Matt Clark and James Fuller created several scoring opportunities. Unfortunately the lack of a striker was once again their undoing. Against the run of play the home team scored two quick goals but rather than being demoralised this spurred Lewes to greater efforts and a penalty corner strike by Rickson found the backboard. With ten minutes to go another Lewes attack resulted in a penalty stroke being awarded which Newman converted confidently. It was then all out effort for the rest of the game but once again Lewes were unable to convert scoring opportunities into goals.

On Saturday Lewes are home to second placed Winchester knowing that a win is vital if they are to have any hope of avoiding relegation.
