Men's 1s continue positive start to season

Relegation last season saw Lewes lose some players from their squad but creditably they have recovered from defeat in their opening fixture to win their last two matches in Division 2 to rise up to fifth in the league.

The early exchanges saw both teams give nothing away until after fifteen minutes an interchange of passes released skipper Matt Clark who drove into the circle and skilfully flicked the ball over the oncoming goalkeeper to give Lewes the lead. Lewes held firm with their defence giving nothing away with Matt Rickson and Sam Worledge outstanding in repelling the hosts’ attacks. Clark and Ian Whiting were also solid in midfield and goalkeeper Ben Berrill made important saves to keep the lead intact at halftime.

Lewes started the second half in the ascendency and deservedly scored early on when, from one of their few penalty corners, new player Toby Price flicked the ball powerfully into the goal to give them a two goal cushion. This affected Holcombe who became frustrated and could not get their normal flowing moves together which reflected on how well Lewes played. With ten minutes remaining Rory Jervis was unlucky to have a goal disallowed and Holcombe then had a chance to get back into the match from a penalty flick after a foot on the goal line. But the flick rattled the crossbar and was cleared to safety.

Manager Peter Boyse was delighted with the win "this was a disciplined team performance and a deserved victory". Tomorrow (Saturday) they host bottom of the table Trojans at 1.30 pm at the Southdown Club who, despite their position in the league, have only lost each of their three matches by a single goal.
