Lewes Men's 1s frustrated to lose lead twice

Still without Chris Spruce plus several others succumbing to injury, it was a young squad looking to overcome last week's disappointment and kick start their season.

Lewes got off to a dream start with James Fuller showing extraordinary pace down the left hand side winning a short corner. The corner was upgraded to a penalty flick due to a drag flick striking an Oxford defender on the line. Alex Baxter stepped up and dispatched the penalty giving Lewes the lead in the second minute. However, this lead did not last long and after some sustained pressure the Lewes defence caved conceding to an Oxford drag flick.

After the half time break Lewes came out all guns blazing winning multiple short corners in quick succession. After a poorly executed drag flick James Fuller pounced on the ball and made the most of the situation by slotting the ball past the Hawks goalkeeper into the left hand side netting once again giving Lewes the lead.

Although there were plenty of 'pewtiful' saves from Lewes Keeper Josh Pewter Lewes did not capitalise on their lead as the Oxford flicker once again found the back of the net levelling the score.

Lewes did not stop there as Sam Heinzl terrorised the Oxford left hand side winning several short corners. Lewes' short corner team once again converted another chance with a Matt Clark deflection.

However, Lewes once again could not hold onto this lead conceding twice more, with the final blow coming in the 66th minute. A frustrating loss for Lewes, losing out by fine margins again.

Notable performances came from two men that are not the spring chickens they once were but showed great experience at the back in a closely fought match: Matt Rickson and Dave Roberts.
