For a while it looked as though Lewes might create an upset as they took on league leaders, Old Georgians...

but the class of the opposition came through in the end and in spite of some unlucky breaks for Lewes they emerged worthy winners.

In the first ten minutes both sides had their chances with Lewes getting two shots on goal but it was Georgians who had the better of the exchanges with three penalty corners, one of which resulted in a goal. Lewes were not to be outdone and mid-way through the half skipper, Matt Needle, burst through the Georgians defence from his own half before passing to Gaston Golstein for him to drive the ball past the keeper. A few minutes later the Lewes pressure resulted in a penalty corner which ended in a slip move and Needle made no mistake with his shot. The Lewes lead was extended a few minutes later when Alex Baxter took the ball down the left, passed to James Fuller who crossed the ball for Golstein to crack a shot past the keeper. For a side that has had trouble scoring goals it was something to savour getting three past the top of league side. However the response was swift and in the five minutes before half time Georgians earned two penalty corners, both of which were converted, making it three apiece at the break.

Georgians scored in the opening minute after half time when their pace left the Lewes defence standing but the forwards responded and a series of attacks resulted in one shot on goal being saved by the post. It was a good period of play for Lewes both in defence and attack but with fifteen minutes remaining Georgians took advantage of a defensive error to increase their lead. Lewes came back with their own attempt on goal but it was saved and Georgians ended the scoring with two penalty corner goals. Again Lewes were unlucky not to pull at least one goal back when another shot hit the upright and a minute later there was an appeal for a penalty stroke when Jonny Rea was taken down by the keeper but the umpire was unmoved.

Lewes will take some consolation from the manner of this defeat because they kept calm throughout, avoiding the yellow cards that have plagued them over the last couple of games, and looked dangerous through to the end. This Saturday they are away to Sevenoaks for another tough game.
