Lewes put up a brave performance against a strong Spencer side but paid ultimately for their slow start to the match.

After 15 minutes the hosts took the lead when, following a penalty corner, the ball was scrambled home after a melee in the circle. Lewes failed to heed this warning and continued to give away possession and 5 minutes later Spencer increased the lead with a well taken goal from open play. Lewes rarely threatened before half time.

In the second half Lewes were a changed side dominating possession and it was no more than they deserved when midway through skipper Matt Needle's penalty corner strike found its way into the back of the goal. Lewes continued to threaten and were thwarted by the Spencer goal keeper who made successive saves to keep their narrow lead. Gaston Golstein on his return from injury in midfield and youngster James Heaton who came on at the end impressed but with 5 minutes left Spencer clinched victory with a goal from close range. After the match Needle admitted Lewes had started too slowly. "We cannot afford to give any side a two goal start. We came back well and could have snatched an equaliser but gave ourselves too much to do with our first half performance."

Lewes are at home on Saturday at the Southdown club 3pm start against Staines.
