The Mens 5s welcomed East Grinstead 4s on a balmy spring Lewes day hoping to claim back to back victories for the first time this season as they look to secure move away from the relegation places.
Lewes started with the numerical advantage with a couple of the E.G. players arriving late, the 5s pushed to get an early lead but the visitors held on until they had a full team. Lewes created chances regularly in the first half but found the opponents keeper hard to beat.
The breakthrough came from a well worked penalty corner with James Williams scoring for the 3rd game in a row.
East Grinstead were stronger in the second half but the 5s held up well with defenders Simon, James H, JC and Julien doing well to not give any clear chances to the young forwards and Paul having shaken off his hip injury kept out any shots that they did attempt.
The midfield had to work hard to match their younger counterparts, Tom as usual covered a lot of ground to screen the defence while James W, Alex, Sandy, Rich and Mark did great in both creating attacks and thwarting E.G. when they came forward.
The 5s held on for an important 3pts and claimed not only their first back to back wins but also their first clean sheet of the season. They are now 4th from bottom but it's still close amongst the 4 teams and is bound to be a few more twists before the season is done but Lewes are in a much better position than they were a couple of weeks ago.
Next week they are also at home as they take on a young and improving Mid Sussex 4s team.
