Confident win sees Men's 5s climb into top half of table for 1st time this season

FIXTURE: Sussex Div 3
HOME TEAM: Lewes Men's 5s. 5 (Debice, Wood, Fewster, Heinzl, Rolph)
AWAY TEAM: Chichester Men's 5s. 0

The last time these two sides met, back in October, Chichester were 4th in the table, Lewes sat in 11th only on goal difference but picked up their first 3 points with a 1-0 away win. On Saturday the tables had turned, Lewes have picked up a few wins and Chichester are on a run of losses.

The Men in Green started confidently and with only 10 minutes on the clock Dax Debice scored with his first shot at goal, closely followed by a reverse sweep from Ben Wood (he's still being taught by son Josiah!) that crept over the line despite two Chi defenders launching their sticks across the goal.

Phil Middleton, supposedly passed 'down' from the 6s, owned the midfield allowing Charlie Cooke to show his ability and confidence going forward on the left and thus bringing Mike Fuller into the game at Left Wing. Consequently the 5s then won 3 Penalty Corner's (wiley ol'Silver) but the Visitor's GoalKeeper was having an outstanding game and well.....Heinzl wasn't on the pitch yet.

The Visitors pushed forward but were met on numerous occasions by the #hardto beat Lewes wall of Tim Bullen, Toby Rolph, Tom Fewster and Simon Murray - nothing was getting through today. As the homeside's confidence built, Toby Rolph played as sole defender and with 2 minutes of the half left, Tom Fewster set off on a looooong mazey run up the pitch, devoid of any engagement. "Why not go all the way?" thought Tom, "Why not have a shot?" and so came the third Lewes goal, a blistering top corner strike to end the half 3-0 ahead.

The second period started with Rob Heinzl on the pitch and a quick Penalty Corner award. A slicker routine saw Fewster inject to Rolph who stopped the ball for one of those Heinzl bullets that caught a defender's stick, obviously nigh on broke it and the ball arced over the Chichester keeper to hit the back of the net.

All but four minutes later came the team goal of the game involving most of the team. It had to as Charlie Palmer in goal reckoned he only had tom Fewster in defence and every other Lewes player was in the opposition's 23!!. Good distribution from Phil Middleton in the Middle (ton) released Charlie Cooke for a little run and a pass out to Mike Fuller at Left Wing who drove into the D, cut back to Wood, to Heinzl, to Dax and then finally to nosebleed Toby Rolph who confidently slapped the ball into the net. Luvverley jubberley.

As old legs faded, Chichester's youth showed some emerging skill and pace that almost caught the 5s napping but 1 on 1 with Charlie clean-sheet Palmer was ultimately no contest. With five goals on the board, all that was left was for the skipper to finally put one away to claim a deserved kiss from a fair maiden in the dugout but, rolling around and 'missing a sitter' still put smiles on faces, provided adequate banter for post-match teas and he still got the kiss anyway.

MOM - Phil (no mistakes) Middleton on his debut for the 5s. Receive - decision - pass......time and again.

Next week the 5s have a 10.15am start Away to Eastbourne 4s (well, their 3s really)
