FIXTURE: Sussex Div 3
HOME TEAM: Lewes Men's 5s. 3 (M Fuller, Dax Debice 2)
AWAY TEAM: South Saxons Men's 4s. 4
Always a tightly contested game between these two sides, South Saxons had the edge on Saturday against a Lewes bare 11 not yet at full strength. Lion's graduates Jamie Coombs and Henry Roser both had superb debuts in the adult section; Jamie playing calmly and confidently at Centre-Back and Henry showing excellent fitness and skills in mid-field.
Against the run of play, Lewes went ahead after 20minutes when Mike Fuller's quick reactions saw him latch on to a rebound off the Saxon's goalkeeper, deflecting it into the back of the net. The lead was soon cancelled by the opposition's centre-mid who danced through the Lewes defence and unleashed a 'shot going wide' that unfortunately deflected off a defender's stick past the wrong-footed Lewes goalkeeper.
After the break, the Visitors were soon 3-1 ahead following a couple of Lewes defensive errors and misplaced passes. With Charlie Palmer between the sticks making numerous saves to keep the score down, the home-side still looked dangerous on the counter attack.
At centre-forward, Dax Debice scored his first of the season from one such counter meaning Lewes were back in the game. With tails up, Henry Roser then made a tackle on the halfway line, dribbled through the Saxon's midfield, defence and on into the D where his final shot was saved but struck home by Dax Debice to claim the equaliser and a well-deserved brace for his tireless running all game.
With 5 minutes left and Saxons having the most possession, Lewes would definitely have been happy with a point, but that was not to be as a goal-mouth melee saw 5 Lewes defenders on the floor and the ball roll in for South Saxons 4th.
Next Saturday the Men's 5s are Away to Brighton 6 at 11.30am Blatchington Mills.
