For a first match of the season in the U14 England Hockey Leagues, our Lion Cubs U14 Boys team travelled up to East Grinstead on Sunday. With some playing their first full pitch games the tactics were clear: work hard on positional structure, support each other in defence and attack, and pass the ball.

They followed this to the letter producing a wonderful team performance in the first half, coming in 1-0 up. The effort in marking in defence made it very difficult for a talented EG team to make headway and the sense of purpose to pass the ball in open spaces on the pitch and down the lines gave our Lewes Lion Cubs a few impressive opportunities.

Following a positive half time chat, the second half started with stronger pressure from EG and an equaliser: 1-1

To this the boys responded so well. They calmly kept their structure under the pressure, gained some positive possession and kept passing the ball. The result was two wonderful goals straight off the white board from half time. One an aerial from half way over a high defensive line to two explosive forwards working together - GOAL! The second a passing move down the line to the corner and then along the base line into the danger zone - GOAL!

Well done boys: 3-1 is a brilliant result to be proud of. A great team performance with passing at its heart.
