It was clear from the start that Brighton were a good side with some real talent up front. However, Lewes started well, opening up the field with some excellent passing plays and putting Brighton under real pressure when they had the ball. After some half chances, Lewes went one up from a Theo Hall / Will Ward combination goal and followed it up with a second, struck from the top of the D by Josiah Wood, shortly thereafter. 2-0 at half time was a fair reflection of play; action at both ends but the balance of play well in Lewes’ favour.
The second half was tighter. The match was 40mins long - a marathon compared to their usual 8min tournament matches! The play ended up much more end to end with Lewes creating chances but also having to defend a series of attacks and short corners. Our tackling was committed and skilful but Brighton were still able to get a number of shots on goal. Sam Harrop who hadn’t been troubled in the first half was suddenly in the action. He goal kept perfectly - making at least half a dozen vital saves.
2-0 at the final whistle to Lewes. At times it looked like it could have been more (2 hit posts!) but equally our defence was put under real pressure too. A fantastic result, requiring everyone to do their bit for the team and a lovely group of friends who continue their winning streak over a number of years now.
