Lewes community unites amid coronavirus crisis

Zoe Richards19 May 2020 - 20:04

Lewes Hockey Club join other local clubs and societies to support food bank collections.

Sadly, due to the current coronavirus crisis many more people have become reliant on food banks. This week local hero Mark Perryman from Lewes Labour party pulled off an astounding feat of logistical wizardry when he organised 106 food bank collection helpers, 9 Lewes sports clubs, 8 Lewes town councillors, 5 Lewes bonfire societies and 4 Lewes Vicars to collect donations on Saturday over 16 hours.

Lewes Hockey Club volunteers Sara Riley, Zoe Richards, Fiona Tubb and Julia ‘Nipps’ Cunningham manned the 3pm shift at Waitrose maintaining appropriate social distancing and with at least one person sporting some rather extreme protective equipment.

4571 items of food were generously donated from generous shoppers at Waitrose, Aldi and Tesco in one day, ranging from pasta to washing up liquid, enough to keep the Lewes food bank going for around 1 month.

Well done to Mark and all the local volunteers who are helping those affected on a daily basis. If you would like to make a donation to Lewes Coronavirus Volunteers who were set up to help anyone in Lewes who is vulnerable or in need as a result of Covid-19 then you can do so here. https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/lewes-coronavirus-volunteers
