They came, they saw, they achieved (very little)

Once they had got over the shock of having been promoted in their sleep during the Summer last year the 5s, soon to be 4s, rose to the challenge of their new league. Like ferns unraveling in the sun they stretched out their legs every Saturday and pulled off many credible performances - some of which even resembled hockey. At times their faithful supporters could barely contain themselves and many small, full, black bags were seen pitch side after the game.

Captain Mould heroically led the troops from the sidelines as they battled each week to keep the opposition at bay. Lance Corporal Gooding taking most of the direct fire and putting in commendable shows of bravery on the front line. Most notable was the day she was uncharacteristically felled by stray leaf on the pitch - mid save.

That’s not say there wasn’t any excitement for the forward line – they managed to put 16 goals away but with an average of 3.9 goals for the opposition in each match – the odds were stacked against them.

Next season the 4s will be returning to the familiar stomping ground of Division 3 - Heads held high. And Iris Jackson will once again be vying for that enviable title of Most Goals Scored By The Longest Serving Female Member Of The Hockey Club. And she’s only 42. Onwards and upwards.
