Ladies 1s dominate Eastbourne in 5-0 win
Hat-trick for Barron in Lewes display of free-flowing attacking hockey
FIXTURE: South Div 3B
HOME TEAM: Lewes Ladies 1s 5 (Barron 3, Hilton, og)
AWAY TEAM: Eastbourne Ladies 1's 0
After a snowed off match the week before, Lewes had the potential to be a bit rusty as they stepped out on to the pitch to play local side Eastbourne on Saturday.
Continuing the theme the ladies had set themselves for this half of the season 'Just have fun' the match began. Lewes started calmly, playing the ball around the back and using the space Eastbourne allowed them to have.
After a great training session during the week with guest Coach Chris Marchant Lewes took what he had worked with them on and applied it to the game. Making the keeper commit one way and calmly passing the ball to an unmarked Amelia Barron Lewes opened up the scoring with a bang.
The second goal came just before the end of the first half. A beautiful series of elimination skills past three of the Eastbourne defenders and a strike that looked like a rocket taking off saw Barron bag her second of the game.
After a very simple team talk, still sticking to the theme Lewes were looking confident going into the second half. The whole Lewes side were playing some brilliant hockey, showing off some silky skills all over the pitch and stringing together some beautiful patterns of play.
One of these patterns quickly resulted in a long ball being chased down by Anna Hilton widthways across the pitch, the speedy Lewes forward picked it up after a 40 yard sprint, drove in along the back line and slipped it to Barron. Barron then calmly and with such composure slotted another goal past the Eastbourne keeper, giving herself a hat-trick and Lewes a good three-nil lead.
But Lewes were not done yet and hopped straight back on the attack winning a penalty corner. The plan was to slip it to Laura Molloy on the far post, however as skipper Sarah Hall went to slap Molloy the ball it hit an Eastbourne foot diverted and found the goal! Lewes now had a four-nil lead.
As time was almost up Lewes had one last attack in them, a real team effort for the last goal saw some brilliant passing between Carly Wise and Flaminia Martin linking up with Laura Molloy who beat the keeper and slipped the ball into the bottom corner. Anna Hilton decided it needed a little helping hand to get there so just tipped it over the line. Securing a solid 3 points for Lewes and a healthy 5-0 win!
Lewes face Teddington 2s away next week and currently sit fourth in South 3B, 1 point behind next week’s opposition.
