Sarah Hall defeats Aldershot & Farnham with final shot of the game

HOME TEAM: Lewes Ladies 1s 2 (Chevassut, Hall)
AWAY TEAM: Aldershot & Farnham Ladies 1's 1
On a beautiful Saturday morning Lewes Ladies 1s meet up to take on third in the league Aldershot and Farnham.
Having beaten this side before Christmas despite them being above Lewes in the league, the Lewes Ladies were apprehensive going into this game. Aldershot were still above them but during the first encounter for the two sides Lewes couldn’t work out why. Aldershot gave Lewes a lot of space and time on the ball to play their style of hockey which was very nice for Lewes but came as a bit of a shock.
As the game began Lewes were hoping for a repeat of Aldershot’s game plan that they had seen pre-Christmas.
With some salacious music playing in the background of our warm up, we were ready to play. It was a very boring (for the players and probably the spectators) first half of hockey. Aldershot reverted to form and gave Lewes plenty of space to transfer the ball and time. Lewes cruised through the half putting together some nice passing but very little pressure. An elegantly played passage by Amelia Barron resulted in a quality deflection by Emily Chevassut gave Lewes a 1-0 lead going into half time.
The second half began by Lewes being bombarded by what seemed like millions of Aldershot players eager for a goal. They had clearly had a firery half time talk. Goalkeeper Anna McQuade made some brilliant saves and even tipped one onto the crossbar. Aldershot kept pushing and pushing and their dream eventually became a reality 8 minutes from the end of the game. They managed to slip one past the Lewes defence. Putting the score line at 1-1.
Two minutes to go and Amelia Barron’s stunning dribbling along the pitch resulted in a penalty corner being awarded . The final whistle blows just as Lewes are about to take the corner. This was Lewes' last chance to notch the win.
A bundle just in front of the line occurred with Emma Pavitt taking no mercy and hitting the ball against an Aldershot defender's foot on the line. 'The umpires then participated in a quick ymca dance' (Carla Leach quote after full time) unsure of what to do. Final decision : penalty stroke.
Captain Sarah Hall was to take. The majestic flick ended Aldershot and Farnham’s chances of getting any points for this game as she sent the keeper one way and the ball the other. GOAL!! The side went wild with joy as they secured 3 points moving them up to fifth in the table.
With the newly fitted lights shinning brightly on Lewes' future we maintained our winning record against the opposition.
