Lewes Ladies 1's lose 1-0 to Southampton in opener
Robust defence, energetic team performance and skilful attacking play not enough to overcome Southampton
LEAGUE: South Clubs' Women's Hockey League Division 3B
HOME TEAM: Lewes Ladies 1's 0
AWAY TEAM: Southampton Ladies 1's 1
On the sunny Saturday of the 23rd of September in the historical town of Lewes, Lewes Hockey Club prepared for the return of the legendary Ladies 1st team. With the anxiety and excitement levels increasing in the changing room, even getting too much for Phoebe Rivet who managed to flood the floor….the game planning commenced.
Our solid back line , including Rosie Youngman, Marie Spence, Sarah Hall and Carly Wise helped to create incredible switching and changing direction of the ball , making us work the opposition hard and enabling us to break the halfway line. Once the ball was in the middle of the pitch Emily Spence and Emma Pavitt created some brilliant 1-2 passes, letting us push forward to the penalty D. Anna Hilton received the ball and ably skilled everyone in her path, winning us numerous short corners. But despite our great efforts - and thanks to regrettably good saves from the opposition goalkeeper - we ended the first half 0-0 .
With the lactic acid starting to be felt in our muscles we soldiered on , possibly helped by our motivational speaker and coach, Hugo Youngman, pitching a good half-time talk. Our brilliant (and loud) goal keeper Robyn Creeden shouting from the back helped us to keep our formation and the ball was passed, short and sharp, from defence to mids to forwards. Amy Evans in the back line slapped it to Ellen Bailes in the middle, who rapidly moved forward, skilling players before waiting to find the correct pass to our well positioned forwards, Jess Wycherley and Libby Youngman, who created even more drama in the attacking D.
Frustratingly, even with our great efforts and incredible team energy we ended our first league match 0-1.
Well done to everyone and lets keep the team spirit up for our next game !
