4s clinch EG nail biter
By Simon Bullmore
On a mild Saturday afternoon in February Lewes 4s gathered for what was to be a tough home game against second-place East Grinstead 3s
Match report: Chris Appleton
Lewes had a strong side and started as though they meant business. Some good passing and a well-placed ball through to Martin lead to a skilful early first goal (1-0). EG heads dropped slightly, at this unexpected setback. But, they did not give up. A strong Lewes defence made up of Coombes, Soudain, Forster, Axton and Cade stood strong against repeated attacks, with Simon Bullmore making some superhuman saves to keep Lewes in the game.
After withstanding a tough period of pressure from EG, Lewes turned the screw again. Charlie Cooke received the ball on the top of the D and in a divine show of skill lifted it over 2 EG sticks and into the corner for a second (2-0). Soon after Martin was denied a second goal after hitting the post with such speed the ball went off the sideline near the halfway point. EG received a short corner right before half time but to no avail. Lewes entered the half time break 2-0 up.
There were clearly strong words in the EG camp as they came out fighting. Not long into the second half EG were awarded another short corner. Lewes gallantly defended a first but conceded a second and weren’t so lucky (2-1). Unphased by this setback, Lewes pressed again. A wonderfully worked ball through from Child found Charles on the left of the D. A stunning reverse hit found the backboard leaving EG stunned (3-1). With dogged determination, EG fought back. Soudain and Coombes rebuffed repeated attempts down the wings in a strong defensive display, but with 5 minutes to play, EG found the net (3-2). Too little too late! The match ended 3-2 to Lewes to raucous cheers from the home crowd.
All round a brilliant performance by the 4s and a very deserving win!
MOMs: Bullmore, Coombes and Soudain. Special mention must also go to the front 3 of Martin, Copplestone and Charles whilst not forgetting Charlie Cooke who worked tirelessly for his goal!
