Ladies 2s win whilst 3s do well do keep the Bognor goal tally down

Sussex Cup
Lewes 2s 3 (Walsh, Busbridge, Rudrum)
Hailsham 1s 0

The Lewes Ladies 2nd team travelled to East Grinstead on Saturday for the Sussex Ladies cup finals. Lewes 2s played their final against Hailsham 1’s where they secured a fine victory by 3 goals to nil. Lewes travelled with a young side who dominated most of the game from start to finish. Ruth Walsh opened the scoring fairly early in the game, with Camilla Busbridge doubling the score before half time. Hailsham had some useful players with experience, but struggled with the pace from the younger Lewes team. In the second half Lewes came out even stronger and in a well-mannered game Gabby Rudrum finished off a fine performance with a wonderful taken goal. Lewes player Rosie Youngman received a special mention from the tournament organisers for her performance, and Lucy Le Lievre was presented with the ‘player of the match’ award after the game.

Sussex Vase
Lewes 3s 1 (Storey)
Bognor 1s 4

Lewes Ladies 3s faced a Bognor side that had won the league and were keen for the double. Tactically Lewes knew they would need to keep Charlotte Cox quiet as she is their lynch pin in an otherwise beatable side. Brook Wain performed the most amazing marking job and helped to cut out the threat from the ex-England player at source. Bognor scored from a well-executed short corner but Lewes soon opened up Bognor’s defence and a well-deflected shot from Sue Storey meant they were level pegging at half time. The second half was fractious as Bognor were disappointed with strong umpiring decisions but once again their short corner routine meant they took the lead again and then scored quickly with another cheap short corner being given away from Lewes. Bognor had two players and their manager sent off in a thoroughly unpleasant passage of play but the Lewes team kept quiet and did not rise to the fracas. Although Lewes lost they can hold their head high in a season that has seen them play some excellent hockey, finish 4th in their league and reach a Vase final.
