Brighton and Hove Ladies 1s (1) won on penalties Lewes Ladies 1s (1) Sussex Cup

The Sussex Cup Semi final match between Lewes ladies 2s and Brighton Ladies 1s took place on Sunday at Blatchington Mill in Hove.

Lewes ladies were up for the challenge of facing the side from the league above and battling the hail and rain. As the game began Brighton used their quick pace up front to run the Lewes defense side to side, they created a couple of opportunities in front of goal but were kept out by keeper Sarah Foggy. Kerry Fitzpatric put in some epic tackles on the Brighton side and had some brilliant connecting play with centre midfielder Marie Spence.

Lewes were linking together beautifully all over the pitch, transferring the ball nicely, releasing the ball quickly and creating goal scoring opportunities upfront. However they could seem to find the back of the net.

Brighton broke back after several waves of attacking play from Lewes. With a couple of quick passes up front they slipped one passed the Lewes keeper to take the lead going into the end of the first half.

As the second half began Lewes carried on with their solid performance. The whole team camped out in the Brighton half passing the ball around and waiting for their opportunity to strike and it finally came. Left back Carly Wise slipped into the attacking D un noticed received the ball and slotted home an equalising goal. With a few mins left on the clock Lewes pushed and pushed for the winning goal but couldn't, with great efforts from striker Lisa Morrison.

The final whistle went and the penalty strokes began. Lewes went first with skipper Sarah Hall putting the first one away giving Lewes the lead. This followed a fantastic save from the Lewes Keeper giving the Lewes the lead. Marie Spence (Lewes) stepped up and put her away but this was quickly followed by Brighton doing the same. Next up sadly came two misses from Lewes and two goals from Brighton. Camilla Busbridge scored the last one for Lewes. The team now needing Brighton to miss their last stroke.... Sarah Foggy the Lewes keeper got a glove to it but sadly it wasn't enough the ball had gone in and Brighton advanced to the next round of the cup. A brilliant performance from both sides.
