On Sunday morning, Lewes Hockey Club hosted their inaugural Junior Club Day at the Southdown. 10 players from the ladies and men’s first xi came down bright and early to offer help and coach, demonstrate and give tips to juniors from school years 1 to 9
The players were greeted by fantastic numbers and great enthusiasm!

The first hour consisted of basic core skills workshops including tackling, passing, shooting and dribbling. By the end of the first hour I think all the players appreciated fully the hard work that Steve Loader and his junior coaches put in every week, because they all looked exhausted.

The second hour was a great opportunity for older junior players to learn skills that they wouldn’t usually in a normal training session. There were focussed workshops on skills such as reverse stick hitting, throwing aerials, drag flicking and goalkeeping. Hopefully some of those players can take those skills into their matches at the weekend.

The morning was wrapped up by a large match and the spectacle of the Ladies Investec cup match against Southgate, in which they managed an emphatic and thrilling win on penalty strokes after the scores finished 3-3.

Thanks to all 1st xi players that made the effort to volunteer, I think everyone enjoyed it and would be keen to do it again, perhaps in the new year – so watch this space!

Also, the 1st team will be looking for volunteer ball boys and girls to help out on match days. So if you’re interested, get in touch with men@leweshc.com
