Sussex Development League East Division
Lewes Lions 6
Penguins Youth 3
The Lions played two games on Saturday, and with this younger squad only nine player were above Year 8. Penguins turned up short of players and an umpire but Nick Cornish stepped into the breach and played very well for them. We won’t say the same about my umpiring! On the day Lewes were a little bit too pretty & nice, if they had faced the later game the older team played at East Grinstead I shudder to think of the consequences. The attacking play was good most of the time with Sam Heinzl & Cameron Baker conjuring up some lovely moves, largely through the turbo boost Max Griggs and, always in the right place, Jack Meacher.
Penguins had some good players and the game and hospitality were a delight, but we still slipped into a comfortable lead through Griggs & Meacher. This was a slightly higher standard than Jack Bage & Luke Griffiths had been used to and they handled it very well, as would the other group of boys who either couldn’t or didn’t play.
The defence had lapses and then the whole team started to think life was easy and just didn’t push themselves, so 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 made this game exciting and frustrating all in one go. Jamie Murray and Jo Rideout played very well in defence though and I want 10% more when they are the leading light, as they are in this team.
Then we ran riot and showed just what we can do. Jack Meacher ended up with 3 goals, which could easily have been 8. Max & Evan Baker scored 3 goals between them, the latter getting more involved and ultimately playing better at centre forward. We hit the post four times!
