Gold, Silver and Bronze as Lewes Juniors find themselves in the medals again

7 months ago By James Hall

Almost 60 players played in six Lewes teams who travelled to Eastbourne on Sunday

Lewes Sunday Junior teams were among the medals again this weekend during a day of tournaments for Under 8s and Under 10s in Eastbourne.

One of the Lewes Under 10s Girls teams won their tournament, one of the Under 10s Boys teams went home with silver medals, and an Under 8s team came third in their tournament.

Well done to all the players in all the teams. And thank you to all the coaches and managers for their terrific efforts.

UNDER 10 GIRLS: Lewes 2
SUMMARY: Played six, won five, drew one
What an outstanding performance from Lewes 2. It finally clicked! Oh what joy to see players running into space, running off the ball and even calling for it! We were treated to some beautiful passing hockey, a real team effort and well-deserved 1st place with 16 points.

UNDER 10 GIRLS: Lewes 1
SUMMARY:  Played 6, drew one, lost 5

Lewes 1 were not on their game at this tournament and unfortunately the results reflected this. A brilliant performance by Matilda in goal, and staunch defence from Erin and Ruby, helped keep the scores lower than they could have been. But there is more work to do on the training ground to help the players gel and to put on a more attacking performance for the next game. Well done to all the players for keeping their spirits up on a hard winter's day.

UNDER 10 BOYS: Lewes Leopards
(Fred, Harry, Josiah, Zac, Sam, Callum, Thomas, William, Oliver)
SUMMARY:  East Grinstead 1 (Draw), Horsham (Draw), Hailsham (Won)

The Leopards had a strong spine to the team which allowed new players to make valuable contributions against strong opposition. The leopards were unbeaten and came second in their pool. By rights, they should have been through to the runners up final but were denied official 3rd place by an administrative error. We are very sorry we did not spot that at the time - such a shame as the boys were playing beautiful hockey and improving with each match.

UNDER 10 BOYS: Lewes Lynxes
(Henry, Theo, Elliot, JC, Ben, Hugo, George)
SUMMARY:  Eastbourne (Won), East Grinstead 2 (Won), Brighton (Won), East Grinstead 1 (Lost)

The Lynx’s came 2nd overall in their tournament, and played in an extremely close and tense game in the final, which went to extra time & then sudden death, but unfortunately conceded a goal first in sudden death. Special mention to George Rochefort who took on goalie duties for the 2nd team, having never been in pads before - and he helped the team get to the final - a great effort!

Both Under 10s boys teams played some great hockey, and was great to see all the boys getting on so well, improving and enjoying their hockey. There was a great spirit in both teams, supporting the other team playing, cheering and celebrating the goals with them.

In terms of things to work on, we can pick up on a few things: pressing the ball carrier and tackling under pressure; taking 16s; attacking with width.

UNDER 8s MIXED: Lewes Foxes
(Rupert, Hannah, Mervyn, Hugo, Jack, Rose and Juliet), played:
SUMMARY: East Grinstead 1s (lost 0-2), Brighton 1s (won 1-0),  Eastbourne 1s (drew 0-0), Burgess Hill 1s (drew 0-0)

Lewes Foxes came third in their group which was a fantastic achievement. Rupert scored their only goal but the whole team played some great hockey with fantastic tackles and passes.

UNDER 8s MIXED: Lewes Wolves
(Caspar, Heidi, Orla, Josh, Henry, Evelyn and Martha) played:
SUMMARY: Burgess Hill 3s (won 2-0), Eastbourne 2s (won 4-0), Burgess Hill 2s (won 5-0), East Grinstead 2s (lost 0-2)

Lewes Wolves came second in their group and played Brighton 1s in the third and fourth play off match. Lewes Wolves beat Brighton 1s 2-1 putting them in third place which was an amazing result. They played brilliantly and scored a total of 11 goals!

Well done to all the players for such a great team effort on a cold December morning.
